The TPS Southwest and Wales regions are pleased to be collaborating with researchers at the University of the West of England (UWE) to present the findings of studies into improving the design of priority crossings for all road users.

The University of the West of England has conducted two research projects on behalf of the Road Safety Trust and Transport Scotland/Sustrans on the effect of enhancing priority for people crossing side roads. One focused on marked priority crossings and the other on design priority crossings and compared them with conventional crossings.

The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) undertook the trial of non-prescribed zebra crossing markings, located at the mouth of the junction, on side roads in Cardiff for the Welsh Government. The study involved monitoring the impact of the trial crossing on road user behaviour employing an innovative AI-based optical sensor system to produce a digital interpretation of road user movements before and after the implementation of the trial crossing; and survey of user perceptions through questionnaires and workshops.

This presentation will share the key findings and explore the implications for different road users in terms of safety and comfort.

Details about the speakers:

Dr Jonathan Flower is a Transport Planner and researcher at the Centre for Transport and Society at UWE Bristol, and a Board member with the Transport Planning Society. His current research project portfolio has a road safety focus and includes bus safety in Nepal; behaviour in proximity to automated vehicles; street design improvements for people walking and cycling; and an evaluation of the West of England e-scooter trial.

Bharti Gupta is a researcher at TRL with over 4 years' experience in behavioural science and social research. With a strong theoretical grounding in research methods in communication, psychology, and user experience, Bharti has worked on a range of projects at TRL towards a more inclusive and accessible transport system. Her current projects focus on developing monitoring and evaluation frameworks using behavioural change theory for various local transport schemes and interventions; road user behaviour relating to road infrastructure; and understanding attitudes and barriers in relation to EV uptake.
