Transport Planning Day

Transport Planning Day is a campaign led by the Transport Planning Society to celebrate the best in transport planning, showcase its benefit to communities and chart a direction for the profession.

Transport Planning Day takes place in mid-November each year, but the campaign runs from spring onwards.

We engage communities, politicians and professionals across the UK to raise awareness of transport planning, highlight the vital role transport planners play in tackling the big challenges of our time and influence the way transport planning is delivered to make better places for people and improve quality of life.

Each year we strive to provide welcoming events that encourage transport planners to make connections across the profession and with associated industries, communities and politicians.

The campaign provides a platform for transport planners to showcase their achievements and encourage young people into the profession.

Providing a clear voice on policy direction

Through the Transport Planning Day campaign, we present the profession’s view to policy-makers – identifying pressing challenges, making recommendations to address them and highlighting the vital role Transport Planners play in improving lives up and down the country.

In 2020, we published an inaugural State of the Nations report focussing on the grand challenge of decarbonising transport and hosted a virtual Transport Select Committee debate, setting out recommendations to put transport on a path to net zero. Read about the report and its findings

Engaging young people in Transport Planning

As a Society we seek to encourage, foster and support the profession’s future talents.

In 2020 we ran an inspiring nationwide poster competition for school children in partnership with Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, to highlight how young people would make the school run cleaner and greener. Exploring the future of the profession

Throughout the campaign we publish and promote blogs from leading voices exploring some of the topical and pressing questions facing the profession.

Communities show Planners what good looks like

Paused in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the People’s Award scours the country for transport planning projects that have shown exceptional engagement and involvement of local communities.

The award was won by Seaford Head School in 2019 for their work to map and support new pupils in walking, scooting and cycling safely to school.

The Sevenoaks Route 8 bus service won in 2018 for developing the service with the community, reducing car dependency and supporting independent mobility among young and older alike.

The shortlist and winners are celebrated on Transport Planning Day in front of an audience of leading professionals, politicians and community champions and amplified across the built environment press.
