Policy panel

The TPS Policy Panel was formed in November 2024 to fulfil objectives including:

  • Ensuring TPS is influential and proactive in seeking improvements in policy and practice, and in setting the transport agenda at a national, regional and local level.
  • Being proactive in the creation of an open, diverse and inclusive transport planning community.
  • Providing the widest possible forum to engage on relevant and topical transport planning issues.
  • Improving the public understanding and the image of transport planning and transport planners, and promoting transport planning as a profession.

The panel aims to get rapid insight on key issues to inform responses, and marshal engagement from a wider range of members. It has five sub-groups:

  • Active travel and micro-mobility
  • Influencing travel demand
  • Rail, bus and freight
  • Governance, business case and modelling/appraisal
  • Development and land-use planning

The policy panel is made up of over 40 TPS members with collective experience in the industry of over 800 years! It meets quarterly to explore key themes for consideration and to respond to requests made to the TPS including relevant formal consultations, and topics requested by those with influence (for example DfT or the devolved administrations). The panel also proactively identifies at least one topic per year where the group wants to see improvements in policy or practice and prepares a thought piece on that.
