Details:
The transport sector, and more specifically the roads sector, has a massive challenge ahead of it, if it is to meet net-zero targets and decarbonise how it designs, builds, and maintains its infrastructure networks. This poses an immediate challenge to asset owners as they seek to balance the short and long-term needs of large, complex networks, while driving radical change internally and across the supply chain.
The ICE‘s Summer Prestige Lecture, our new Transport Lecture, will discuss these issues and explore in the light of the climate emergency how we can ever build roads again and what role engineers can play in rising to the challenges facing the sector.
Nick Harris, chief executive, National Highways, and Andy Falleyn, deputy director for the strategic road network, Welsh Government, will explore the approaches in England and Wales to road investment and the impact that carbon targets are having on their short-long term plans for road construction and asset management.
After their talks, Nick and Andy will be interviewed by two of the ICE’s President’s Future Leaders, Lucy Davison and Blake Scott, to dive into the core themes of their talks and draw out lessons on how transport and infrastructure design can support the push towards net-zero.
The session will finish with a panel response, where the speakers will look ahead to how technology, innovation, and engineers can support future highways projects, drive more low-carbon designs, and ensure the network has the resilience to meet the challenges of the future.
