With transport now the largest source of carbon emissions in the economy, decarbonising transport is an urgent priority. At first glance, this should be easy – or at least easier – in urban areas than in suburban or rural areas, given their relative density, mixed land-uses and range of potential travel choices. What should our approach be to delivering this most critical change? How do we need to adapt our conventional approaches? What evidence do we have of “what works” in complex real cities?

Mark Gill, Associate Transport Planner at Buro Happold, believes that conventional approaches to sustainable mobility are flawed. It is only by unpacking the relationship between user-behaviour, transport choice, land-use planning, transport pricing, urban planning and vehicle types he believes we can consider the potential for shaping the future of our cities.

Enrica Papa is Professor in Transport Planning at the University of Westminster. Her research is positioned at the intersection of urban, transport and economic geography. She has researched extensively into sustainable urban transport policy and practice, nationally and globally.
