This course is split over two days. On the first day delegates will be updated on UK road safety collision trends and emerging issues impacting upon road safety (including ‘pop up’ infrastructure and ‘Low Traffic Neighbourhoods’), a review of the requirements of a Road Safety Audit brief and examine the ‘safe systems’ approach to casualty reduction and its relevance in road safety audit and applied engineering practice, as one way of ensuring that safety is given sufficient consideration in the design process.
Day two covers international Road Safety Audit and Assessment practice, with a focus on the United Nations International Decade of Action, comparing typical UK practices and conditions with those likely to be encountered internationally. Human behavioural factors and evolving technologies and agendas will also be discussed.
Learning outcomes On completion of the course, delegates will:
• be acquainted with the causes of accidents
• have an understanding of Vision Zero and Safety Systems
• have an understanding of the role of engineering, education and enforcement in addressing road safety
• be aware of the safety audit process and the role and responsibilities of those involved
• have an understanding of different approaches to the Road safety Audit Process
• be aware of the latest developments in the revision of DMRB GG119
• have an understanding of the differences in road safety principles and practices worldwide
The course is designed for experienced engineers or road safety auditors who wish to enhance and update their knowledge of road safety engineering issues. This course qualifies as the annual two day CPD required in UK UK in order to continue to undertake audits on trunk roads per DMRB GG119.
A total of 1,784 people were killed in reported road traffic accidents in Great Britain in 2018, similar to the level seen since 2012, which followed a period of substantial reduction in fatalities from 2006 to 2010. Although UK remains one of the best performing countries in the world when it comes to road safety, there are still improvements that can be made to reduce the number of deaths and injuries occurring on our roads. This course contributes to skill enhancement and continuing knowledge of practicing road safety professionals
