Job Description

The role

Are you a forward-thinking transport professional, a decision maker and are you keen to lead capital projects and support strategies which will make a difference? Do you want to be a key part of the urgent agenda in Oxford: delivering transport and connectivity changes which build a world class city for everyone?

This is an exciting time to work on green transport in Oxford. The most pressing challenge is to ensure that green transport is a pillar of Oxford’s sustainable recovery from COVID-19. Progress on green transport will also support all four of the Council’s corporate aims: fostering an inclusive economy; delivering more affordable housing; supporting flourishing communities and pursuing a zero carbon Oxford.

To this end, the Council has its own budgets for implementing changes to the roads and footways of Oxford; it is an important stakeholder in all transport strategies and schemes which are developed by Oxfordshire County Council (the highways authority), such as the emergency active travel fund activities; and it is a partner with the County Council on major schemes such as Connecting Oxford, the Zero Emission Zone and Controlled Parking Zones, all of which are going through crucial phases in 2021. All of these work streams are ongoing while the Council is formalising its approach to green transport within the Regeneration & Economy service area. This includes creating a virtual team, which brings together relevant officers from across the Council and the creation of the Inclusive Transport & Movement focus group, which has been invaluable in ensuring accessibility and inclusiveness are prioritised in all transport projects.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in this work; whether it be in contributing to strategy documents or representing the Council at stakeholder meetings or being a project lead on capital or feasibility-stage transport projects. You will need to be pragmatic and independent and have a solution-focussed attitude. You should have the ability to make effective decisions, to manage budgets and to communicate across large organisations and with a wide range of stakeholders. Technical expertise related to transport is valuable but not essential in the role.
