Principal Transport Planner

Job Description

We are looking for a Principal Transport Planner to help with the expanding workload of our Milton Keynes transport consultancy team at Midsummer Boulevard, Milton Keynes.

Your Role

This is a varied and challenging role; you will be working as part of a small transport team co-located within a larger Town Planning team. Full support will be provided on a day-to-day basis by an experienced transport planning professional with additional support available from the wider Midlands Transport Team located in Leicester and Nottingham. Our clients typically include; housing and commercial developers, local authorities, highway authorities, architects, town-planners and other professionals. Your work will primarily be development related transport planning and would include preparation of Transport Assessments, Travel Plans and other development related transport reports. You will help mentor and support junior staff and be proactive in keeping up to date with current practices, guidelines etc. in our field. You will undertake site visits and attend meetings as required.

Professional Development

Professional growth and personal development is strongly encouraged. You will have the option to enrol on the Transport Planning Society’s Professional Development Scheme and would be assigned a personal mentor at WYG who would guide you through the process with a view to gaining a professional qualification.

About you

We are looking for a keen, progressive and versatile individual with a genuine interest in transport consultancy.

  • Experience of developing and maintaining client relationships.
  • Securing repeat business and new commissions to keep self and junior staff productive.
  • Financial management of project portfolio.
  • Experience of working for private and public sector clients.
  • Experience of producing Transport Assessments and Travel Plans.
  • Experience of analysing, collating and interpreting data.
  • Knowledge of core highway design principles relevant to development layouts and site access design.
  • An ability to use AutoCAD and GIS software would be useful, but not essential.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience of specialist transport planning software packages such as TRICS, Junctions 9 and LinSIG.
  • Knowledge of strategic modelling software capabilities and interpretation of outputs.
  • You will have worked in the UK previously, understanding the planning process and how your work fits into that.

The ideal candidate is likely to have a degree or an MSc in an analytical subject such as transport planning, engineering, mathematics, science, economics or geography.
