Principal Transport Planner, Cardiff

Job Description

About the Role

As one of the world’s leading engineering, professional services and technical consultancy firms, at WSP, we’re passionate about the big questions. And big answers, naturally. For us that’s all about reaching beyond the expected to do work that’ll make a profound impact felt long into the future.

Regionally, we operate through our Southern offices, which include offices in Cardiff, Bristol and Exeter. We are seeking an enthusiastic Principal Transport Planner to provide support to the transportation planning capability across our region.  The person will be based in our Cardiff office and will contribute to the delivery of projects for our public and private sector clients.

We work with the public sector, delivering on policy commitments and funding applications. We create large scale transport models that assist strategic planning decisions and transport investment.

Our interpretation of the latest regulatory requirements, Planning Policy guidelines, knowledge of current best practice and our wealth of technical expertise means we can identify and assess development opportunities that deliver.

We also have the UK’s largest team of development and transport planners, all dedicated to enabling our clients to create viable and deliverable developments which provide lasting social and environmental improvements.

Though our pioneering work on applying movement frameworks and street design concepts to masterplans, and our research in transport policy and our intelligent transport system designs, we’re able to create places that respond to the needs of all stakeholders.

We act as strategic advisors and expert witnesses, specialising at all stages from pre-acquisition studies to delivery. Our clients draw on our transport modelling and planning capabilities to deliver evidence to support the planning functions of local authorities and create sustainable transport investment plans.

A typical week would include:

  • Being involved in a number of projects at any given time, across our South Western offices
  • Providing support to a number of senior staff as well as leading your own project work - including monitoring performance against budgets and programme and delegating appropriate tasks to junior team members
  • Winning work either through existing contacts or working closely with our client-focused teams to help develop high quality relationships with clients
  • Assisting in the management and training of our Graduates and Apprentices

About You

You will have an excellent understanding of transport planning, and the versatility to apply your skills in transport policy and scheme development.  You will be expected to not only provide transport planning expertise but also start to apply project and staff management skills as part of your daily role.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • A Degree in relevant spatial or numerical subject
  • An excellent understanding of transport project development processes;
  • Experience of the production and review of transport plans and strategies, feasibility studies, Option Assessment Reports and Business Cases
  • Working knowledge of transport guidance and current best practice (such as WelTAG and/or WebTAG);
  • Working knowledge of current transport policy at sub-regional, regional and national level;
  • The ability to think at both strategic and detailed levels;
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills and excellent working knowledge of MS Office tools
  • Ability to produce high quality project reports, including technical documents;
  • Ability to communicate technical arguments to technical and non-technical clients; and present outputs from studies to range of audiences.

The following skills/qualifications are desirable:

  • Working towards Chartered Engineer/TPP status;
  • Post-graduate degree in Transportation Planning or other relevant subject;
  • Experience of traffic engineering and modelling;
  • Competence in GIS techniques; and
  • Full and clean driving license.
