Station Capacity Specialist

Job Description

Ever wondered why stations are crowded? Ever felt like you’ve seen a solution to this?

Are you intrigued by the behaviours and choices made by people in crowded environments?

Does the prospect of working on big infrastructure projects excite you?

Do you have an inquisitive mind? Do you like problem solving?

Have you ever considered how station design enhances social mobility and economic growth?

If you have answered ‘Yes’ to any of the above, a job with Network Rail’s Station Capacity Team may be your ticket to success!

We are a diverse and growing team of transport planners and analysts from a variety of backgrounds. We are Network Rail’s experts in understanding and explaining the relationship between station design, operations, and passenger movements. We carry out sophisticated modelling and data analysis to support the case for rail investment, and are involved throughout the development of new station infrastructure, from problem definition, masterplanning, and design option selection, through to managing passenger flows during construction and monitoring station performance after delivery.

The Role

As a Station Capacity Specialist, you will get involved with a variety of projects, undertaking complex data analysis to understand congestion at a local commuter station, using the latest in micro-simulation techniques to provide input into the design of a new HS2 terminus, or collaborating with innovators on hi-tech passenger movement data systems. You will get out and about on the railway, making new connections, quickly building up your knowledge and skills, and getting exposure to the different types of work that we do and the communities that we serve. Soon you will be responsible for conducting your own pieces of analysis and helping communicate the results to our internal and external stakeholders.

While most of your learning will be on-the-job and from colleagues, new Station Capacity Specialists are also able to attend formal training courses covering wider transport planning principles and the use of pedestrian simulation software. The team can provide a wealth of opportunities to help you to start and pursue your career alongside industry leaders, gain experience throughout the wider capacity and planning sector of Network Rail, as well as follow an approved Transport Planning Professional qualification.

We are seeking creative and logical thinkers and problem-solvers, who have the enthusiasm and passion to really make a difference in their work, and to those that they work with. As well as a good degree in an analytical subject, you will also have strong numerical and communication skills, some experience in using Microsoft Excel, the ability to work successfully as part of a team, and a demonstrable interest and knowledge in the UK rail network.

We have opportunities in our London and Manchester offices, both of which provide excellent and vibrant places to live and work.

The starting salary will be between £32,256 and £36,288, experience dependant, with other benefits including:

  • 35 hour working week, with flexible working options
  • 28 days annual leave, with opportunity to buy and sell extra days
  • 75% subsidy on season ticket (up to a certain value)
  • General bonus scheme

Network Rail welcomes applications regardless of age, disability, marital status (including civil partnerships), pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, transgender status, sex (or gender), employment status, trade union affiliation, or other irrelevant factor. We positively embrace flexible working recognising that employees may wish to balance work and family/home life.
