Transport Planner

Job Description

Would you like to join our established multi-disciplinary consulting team in Edinburgh? As part of the continued growth, we are looking for a Transport Planner/Engineer with at least two years of experience.  Whilst based in our Edinburgh office, you will have the opportunity to work in other locations to support projects throughout the UK.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who have a strong interest in the Planning, Design and Consultation of active travel schemes and who can demonstrate relationships with key active travel stakeholders.

“Arup doesn’t feel hierarchical, you don’t feel like a cog in a machine and your ideas are treated with respect at all levels. Being enthusiastic and proactive will be rewarded.

I find the variation in work the most rewarding. As a graduate, being exposed to some of the largest infrastructure projects in the country as well as being given real responsibility on smaller, local projects is very rewarding. I enjoy working in the Transport Consulting Team as you are involved in high profile projects, working collaboratively as part of a diverse team from day one. The work is challenging but creativity is encouraged to provide the best for clients in addition to personal professional development” -  Recent Graduate, Transport Consulting Team

The Role

The successful candidate will become an integral part of an existing strong transport planning, planning and environmental team based in Edinburgh, whilst also supporting the teams based in Glasgow and Newcastle.

You will:

  • Support senior management in delivering key projects.
  • Manage smaller individual projects or elements of larger projects in support of the PM/PD.
  • Provide technical and professional support, management and mentoring of junior members of staff.
  • Supporting the business development and continued growth of the Consulting group in Edinburgh and the wider Scotland and North-East group.

Required Skills & Experience

We are seeking a diverse and experienced individual who has knowledge/awareness of a broad range of areas, with demonstrable experience including: transport planning, active travel, engineering, management, stakeholder engagement and analytical capabilities, with an interest in new innovations in transport and, for example, the relationships between transport planning, noise, air quality and health. The successful candidate will have:

  • Minimum of two years’ relevant experience in transport planning with technical knowledge demonstrated across a range of areas included active travel, transport policy, transport modelling and transport assessments.
  • A transportation consulting background and be progressing towards TPP/CEng accreditation.
  • Experience of writing and presenting technical reports.
  • Able to demonstrate a knowledge of the private and public-sector markets within Scotland and the North-East of England and be keen to develop their experience in active travel, development planning, transport policy/research, Masterplanning, design, analysis and industry standard modelling packages.
  • Experience in stakeholder and community engagement and working within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Able to work under clear instruction and independently, with a track record of delivering quality outputs aligned with project deadlines.
  • Confident with proven interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Able to manage workload and ability to carry out tasks to strict deadlines and budgets.
  • Proficient in analytical data analysis and modelling.
  • Degree qualified and have either achieved or working towards Chartered Membership of a relevant professional body.
