Job Summary

Our Transport practice in Dublin includes a team of economists that provides consultancy services to a range of clients in Ireland and the EU as a whole. This consultancy team currently has a vacancy for a Senior Economic Consultant with academic training in and, ideally, experience of economic analysis and research. This person will take on a management role in the team, managing studies and participating in work winning activity. A track record in non-transport economic consulting would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be an economics graduate, preferably with a masters degree, with experience working at a similar role in another transport consultancy, a specialist economic consultancy or as an independent consultant. . The successful candidate would join a team carrying our economic consulting and evaluation in the field of transport and wider policy areas. They would take on a leadership role in the team and would work with head of the team to graw this part of AECOM’s business.

The Dublin office has been developing as a firm wide centre of expertise in economic consulting. Over the past four years the Dublin based economics team has been delivering economic consulting services to clients in Ireland the UK and across Europe. This work has been carried out by a core team in Dublin and a network of staff with economic and relevant engineering expertise around the UK. We are now looking to enhance and grow this team with individuals with a sound technical background that share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload, and assist in growing the business further.

The team provides economic input into transportation projects, for example by providing forecasts of parameters such as income and employment to colleagues carrying out transport modelling or carrying our economic and financial appraisal of proposed investments for feasibility studies. The team is also involved in the evaluation of spending programmes in the areas of transport and other infrastructure, and economic advice to policy makers in the field of transport and energy and more widely. The team also provides economic analysis and advice in wider policy issues to private and public sector clients.

AECOM in Ireland currently employs over 600 professionals in various sectors in the Republic and Northern Ireland, with over 200 working on Transport projects. The AECOM office in Dublin has an established track record of successfully delivering transportation projects throughout Ireland, as well as internationally, in both the urban and rural environment.

Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of Irish and European studies. A selection of our current and recent projects includes:

  • Evaluation of the investments in transport made with Cohesion Policy assistance across the EU in the 2007-2013 programming period for the European Commission

  • Financial and economic analysis of proposals to generate renewable energy in Ireland for transmission and sale via a UK Interconnector

  • Research and evaluation advice for the Irish National Roads Authority

  • A long term evaluation project on the introduction of sustainable travel measures in pilot “Smarter Travel Areas”

  • Economic and financial appraisal of the DART Underground proposal

  • A feasibility study for a intermodal freight terminal in Riga as part of the Rail Baltica project

  • An evaluation of supports to entrepreneurship provided by City and County Enterprise Boards

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Technical leadership of teams carrying out economic consulting studies

  • Managing the relationship between AECOM and clients as studies are completed

  • Communicating the results of our work to a range of audiences

  • Identifying opportunities for the AECOM economics team, and working with the head of the team to convert these into sales

  • Research including literature reviews of existing academic and grey material

  • Analysis of quantitative and financial data using spreadsheet software

  • Statistical analysis of data using statistical software and preparation of graphs, charts and tables communicating findings

  • Primary research including quantitative and qualitative interviewing under supervision of experienced staff

  • Drafting of text describing results of this work

  • Participating in analysis and problem solving work of unit

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Primary degree in economics or closely related discipline

  • Previous experience of economic consulting work or similar work in an academic policy context

  • Good drafting skills

  • Highly numerate

  • Proficient user of document production, spreadsheet and presentation software

  • Ability to research and analysis economic and policy issues

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post graduate qualification preferable
