Job Description

About the Role

Think bigger scale. Think higher profile. Think ground-breaking. Join WSP, and you’ll be at the heart of a team of international experts all dedicated to growing and sharing their expertise, and working on projects that transform society for all of us. The Development & Transport Planning team in London predominantly undertake development planning work, specialising in providing highways and transport advice to a wide-range of private sector clients, while supporting several key local authority clients. We provide advice on access, transportation and infrastructure issues and support development proposals throughout the planning process. Most of our projects are located in London but we also work on projects throughout the UK and internationally. Our projects range from minor extensions of community facilities, town centres and major business parks, through to the redevelopment of London’s largest and most high-profile opportunity areas.

We are looking to recruit enthusiastic team players with a ‘win-win’ focus. The candidates will have significant experience, a proven ability to deliver to a high standard, passion to share their knowledge and a desire to learn and contribute to the on-going success of our team.

You will be an experienced transport planner with extensive knowledge and experience of the planning process including EIP / structure plans and public inquiries / local plans. You will be well versed in the preparation of Transport Assessments for major developments, together with Travel Plans, Transport Studies, the associated negotiations with planning, highways and transport authorities and ideally have some experience as expert witness.

A typical week would include:

  • Supporting clients’ progress toward securing planning permission for their sites. You will be active on multiple projects and client accounts at any time, requiring strong time management. You will be supported by a pool of experienced technical staff at various grades, and will be expected to manage project resources and delegate tasks accordingly.
  • Support the wider team’s internal financial and commercial management through robust project delivery. Strong knowledge of the financial and contractual aspects of planning, bidding, and delivering both large and small projects is important. Experience across a range of development sectors would be an advantage.
  • Building up a team, day-to-day management of a team of support staff, client liaison and business development. The position will report to a Technical Director.

Prior project management experience will be highly beneficial, although development support will be provided as part of the role. You will have shared responsibility for business development with key account management responsibilities.

About You

We are looking for someone who is keen to develop as the team grows. A genuine interest in transport planning and engineering is essential to ensure a close fit with our highly motivated team. You will have an in-depth experience of providing transport planning and design advice on development schemes in London and the south east.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • A proven record in client care / business development and have a number of clients that see you as their principal contact.
  • Relevant qualifications (Bachelor or Masters) in a numerical or spatial discipline and extensive experience in transport planning in a development planning environment. The ability to think at both strategic and detailed levels is advantageous.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills and be comfortable working both as part of a team or individually. Experience in technical report writing and consultation with stakeholders is essential.
  • A demonstrated track record of competent project management and strong leadership in the delivery of small and large transport planning projects. Your project management experience will encompass both single and multi-discipline projects.
  • Knowledge of preliminary highway design, junction design and analysis, traffic software (including TRICS, VISSIM, LINSIG, Junctions and TRANSYT), traffic management techniques and TfL, Highways England and Local Authority design guidance so as to enable you to delegate to and accurately interpret the work of others. It is also desirable to have an appreciation of TfL’s suite of strategic highway and public transport models, e.g. LTS, Railplan LTS-PT, sub-regional HAMs, Cynemon.
  • Experience in a range of sectors and work types would be beneficial. Ideally you will have knowledge of areas such as public transport and policies at local, regional and national level; including the London Plan and Mayor’s Transport Strategy. Some knowledge of Inquiry procedures would also be useful but is not essential. Chartered status or aspirations towards securing chartered or an equivalent status are a strong positive.
