Regionally, we operate through our northern offices in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow. We are seeking an enthusiastic Principal Transport Modeller to fill a key position within our established and highly experienced team in Manchester or Liverpool. This role will help us to deliver highway and public transport, scheme appraisal and development assessment projects for a range of local, regional and national clients and help support our public sector teams and capitalise on emerging market opportunities. The North West transport team offers clients a wide range of multi-disciplinary services including transport modelling and appraisal as well as development planning work, master planning, public transport studies, complemented by our other offices nationally.

The successful candidate will be working within a highly skilled transport modelling team, known for providing client-ready solutions based on technical competence and expertise. The team currently has a range of regional highway and public transport modelling projects, micro simulation modelling, scheme appraisal and development assessment work for a variety of clients, including local authorities, government bodies, LEPs and private developers. 

A typical week would include:

  • Manage and lead a range of strategic modelling projects working closely with senior members of the Strategic Modelling Business.
  • Project Management of projects and management of project teams.
  • Development and implementation of modelling and economic assessment methodologies where appropriate.
  • Assist senior colleagues to implement technical quality procedure across the team.
  • Deliver strategic modelling projects to programme and budget.
  • Strategic transport model development including, but not limited to; model building, calibration/validation, model testing and auditing, checking and analysis of model output.
  • Interpretation of data and information, including preparation of technical reports and proposals for clients.
  • Contribute to internal financial and commercial reporting
  • Attendance at internal and client team meetings.
  • Skills transfer to team members.
  • Direct reporting to external and internal clients
  • Contribute to our process of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing relating to transport modelling across our national transport business.

About You

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Degree in relevant spatial or numerical subject, at Grade 2:1 or above;

The following skills are essential:

  • Ability to produce project reports, including technical documents;
  • Ability to communicate technical arguments to technical and non-technical clients, and present outputs from studies to range of audiences with an ability to explain transport modelling outputs to a non-technical audience
  • Expert knowledge of transport modelling theory and methods, data collection, analytical techniques and appraisal methods.
  • In-depth experience of developing transport models from first principles, including forecasting techniques.
  • Ability to devise study methodologies
  • Proven ability to build, calibrate and validate transport models with minimum supervision
  • Wide experience of strategic modelling highway and public transport software such as SATURN, VISSUM, Cube/Voyager, EMME2.
  • A clear and comprehensive understanding of UK Government transport planning policies and guidance, including WebTAG and DMRB.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills and excellent working knowledge of MS Office tools
  • Proven ability to deliver client satisfaction and commercial success.

The following skills / qualifications are desirable:

  • Chartered Engineer / TPP status;
  • Post-graduate degree in Transportation Planning or other relevant subject with transport modelling modules or experience;
  • Experience in GIS techniques- ArcGIS
  • Experience with VISSIM, AIMSUM or Paramics
  • Experience of scheme appraisal
  • VBA, Python programming or similar and experience of programming bespoke analysis tools.
  • Full and clean driving license

If not already achieved, the candidate will be expected to work towards professional accreditation
