Senior Transport Planner

Job Description

Your role

As a Senior Transport Planner within TfGM’s Appraisal team, you’ll assist in appraising the costs and benefits of potential transport schemes. The role is data driven and you’ll help develop and operationalise innovative and robust ways of measuring benefits of schemes. We don’t just use well established national and local guidance, but build on it to ensure a fit for purpose and locally tailored approach to all we do. You will be required to be flexible and to have an ability to be proactive when required. As part of the Modelling & Analysis team, you will work with internal partners throughout TfGM and alongside external partners.

This is hybrid role where you will be expected to work in the office 2 days per week.

About you

First and foremost, you will need to have an understanding and enthusiasm for the BEE Network mission in GM: namely, to develop a fully integrated transport system for the region that makes travel easier.

Alongside an enthusiasm for our mission, you will also have experience of (and interest and enthusiasm for) transport in general and transport planning in particular. Since graduation, you will have developed your skills and experience in the areas of transport forecasting, transport appraisal, economic appraisal and data analysis. Ideally, you will also have picked up direct experience of transport operations and/or transport programme delivery. You will be comfortable with handling large data sets and have the skills to communicate complex analytical and appraisal outputs to varied audiences through written reports, verbally and through presentations.

What we offer and where this career can take you

The successful candidate will get a thorough grounding in the forecasting and appraisal tools and techniques used by TfGM in the context of working in a busy transport planning and analysis department. For those interested in a career in this area, we can offer an unrivalled package that includes:

  • mentorship by an experienced management and leadership team
  • the opportunity to build your career in a career graded position, with excellent learning and development opportunities that include progress towards professional accreditation.
  • We frequently work with peers across the UK, including in academia. This role will give you the chance to develop your network of contacts across the local and national transport appraisal and forecasting community.
  • the chance for you to join a talented team with a real sense of purpose and a great team spirit.
