Our Passenger & Station Analysis team is home to a team of 17 professionals delivering exciting projects in the Transport Planning space including:

  • Station congestion relief schemes
  • New station design development
  • Access for all scheme prioritisation and design
  • Masterplans development
  • Parking studies
  • Interchange improvements
  • Strategic Transport modelling

We work on both short- and long-term projects, from small to large, across various project stages.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking to recruit a Senior Station Capacity Planner/ Pedestrian modeller for our successful station planning team. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with at least six years’ experience who wishes to work within a high performing, dynamic team.

The successful applicant will be flexible, self-motivated, be able to work successfully as part of a team and be someone who wants to make a difference through their work and can inspire others!

In addition, you will need to be able to:

  • Prove significant experience and knowledge of pedestrian planning standards and modelling tools (using Legion and other tools such as Viswalk).
  • Evidence that you have managed medium to large-sized pedestrian modelling projects and be able to do the technical part of the project yourself should this be needed.
  • Show that you have acted as a technical head on pedestrian space planning projects
  • Skills in PTV Visum are a bonus as we have developed a strategic rail network model using this platform.

Ideally you can convince both senior managers and frontline staff using your excellent communication skills. You should be aware of what innovations and technology advancements are happening in the sector including data collection, monitoring, analytics and insight reporting.

What does the average day look like? 

The role available is looking after the team’s work in Eastern region. You will be the regional lead for our team which means you will form a close working relationship with the relevant stakeholders and advise them on station capacity matters and actively seek out opportunities to offer the team’s wider transport planning ability to internal clients on matters relating to station masterplans, interchange planning, prioritisation of schemes within the region.

The team is involved in step free accessibility, travel plans, parking strategy for stations, passenger travel data insights and strategic rail modelling. You will also be able to use your wider transport planning skills in these areas over and above the core station capacity planning work.

You will be liaising with, for example, our Strategic Planners and Commercial Scheme Sponsors and provide day to day advice on station capacity issues, where interventions are needed, how urgently and to what scale such as need for station enhancements and improving crowd management measures. The team’s remit and that for this role extends to all Managed and Franchised stations and passenger journeys to/from and internal within the region.

Other things you get involved in:

  • Act as the senior responsible person for the team for station change and design signoffs.
  • Examine or supervise the analysis of data to extract outputs needed.
  • Regularly engage with internal and external stakeholders to develop plans and benchmark priorities for the region focussed on passenger capacityand experience improvements.
  • Creation, development, review and audit of pedestrian simulation models and reports developed internally and externally through consultants.
  • Write up or review and audit study reports based on findings from data analysis, observations and any senior briefing notes.
  • Write proposals for pieces of work to our internal customers.
  • Present findings to project stakeholders and attend relevant meetings / regular working groups.
  • Work closely with project team members to deliver projects to agreed timescales and budgets.
  • You will have line management responsibilities for around 1 to 2 people and be able to mentor within the wider business.
  • You will get involved in how we can continuously improve, use new technologies and create the best environment possible for our passengers.

What essential skills and experiences are needed?

  • Chartered professional qualification (TPP) through CIHT or TPS, or able to show equivalent experience.
  • Significant experience, running a variety of pedestrian modelling projects (from small to large) as a project leader dealing directly with clients.
  • Demonstrable ability and knowledge of standards relating to station design, capacity and evaluation criteria in order to certify station designs (for Network Rail and TfL).
  • Proven ability to engage with internal as well as external customers and build collaborative relationships with stakeholders.
  • Can prove good project management skills, having had responsibility for delivering projects within agreed timescale, budget constraints and quality expectations on projects/ programmes, dealing directly with clients.
  • Knowledge of passenger forecasting techniques used in the transport industry to understand and inform the gaps and risks associated with them when using this for station capacity analysis.
  • Familiar with innovations and technological advancements in the industry in order to test and evaluate new technologies in a railway environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing and developing teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – written and verbal, including writing and reviewing reports, writing fee proposals and presenting to stakeholders.
  • Can prove complex problem solving, making choices and analytical skills, especially where no set guideline exist.

We would also like, but not essential.

  • Experience in PTV Viswalk and Visum
  • Experience in Power BI

The salary range for this role is £53,202 - £59,853.
