An exciting opportunity has arisen in Hackney Council’s Sustainable Transport and Engagement team for a Senior Sustainable Transport Planner. You will lead a team delivering smarter travel programmes and events to influence behaviour change towards more sustainable forms of travel.

You will join an industry leading team with a track record of delivering innovative, and award-winning sustainable transport projects including Hackney’s trailblazing School Streets programme and the London Walking and Cycling Conference. As well as leading on these high-profile projects, this role offers the opportunity to lead on delivering a wide range of projects while also having responsibility for fulfilling a number of core functions.

Working alongside the Principal Transport Planner, you will have line management responsibility for a team of travel planners and ensure the successful delivery of a number of high profile projects and events to a high standard. In addition, you will also be responsible for ensuring that the work the team is responsible for contributes towards meeting the Council's strategic targets for transport. This includes delivering the Council’s sustainable travel to school programme, initiating new programmes, such as Hackney’s Green Screen programme, as well as responsibility for ongoing functions such as reviewing and monitoring development travel plans.

You will have responsibility for financial management and reporting across a portfolio of projects and ensuring that budgets are followed. You will also be expected to act as the lead officer for the Authority in your particular areas of specialism. This may include giving presentations and public speaking, briefing Councillors and responding to correspondence and casework from members of the public.

What we are looking for is proven experience with and knowledge of; transport planning, travel plans, behaviour change initiatives, marketing, project management and/or event management, financial management, management of staff, and familiarity with working in a political environment.

You will have proven skills and abilities in project management and be able to successfully deliver against multiple deadlines, along with proficient IT skills. With excellent report writing skills required for the preparation of reports and consultation documentation, and good understanding of environmental and sustainability policy and legislation. In addition, you will be able to: communicate effectively with service users e.g. negotiations, presenting evidence or advice in a public forum within Hackney’s diverse community; liaise with other internal directorates and external agencies to communicate project objectives and/or source information required; understand plans and drawings and other relevant technical information related to Sustainable Transport projects and be willing to attend meetings or undertake work outside normal working hours e.g. evening meetings.

Ideally you will have a qualification and membership of, or eligibility for membership of a relevant professional body in transport planning or similar fields. Previous experience of working in a local authority setting is desirable, but not essential.
