David Strahan FRSA, author of The Last Oil Shock, is an award winning investigative journalist and documentary-maker specialising in difficult business and science stories, working for 10 years on the BBC’s Money Programme and Horizon.

“Peak Oil” is world oil production peaking then going into decline, with spectacular impacts on its price. With 95% of transport dependent on oil fuel, a frightening crisis could result. A debate over the likely date of peak oil has raged between independent geologists and the oil industry for several years, with a widespread view forming that the critical date is closer than we realise. Yet mainstream transport planning in UK proceeds almost entirely oblivious of the peak oil issue, the risks it presents, and the scale of the response that would be necessary.
