'Peak Oil' is world oil production peaking then going into decline, with spectacular impacts on its price. With 95% of transport dependent on oil fuel, a frightening crisis could result. A debate over the likely date of peak oil has raged between independent geologists and the oil industry for several years, with a widespread view forming that the critical date is closer than we realise. Yet  mainstream transport planning in UK proceeds almost entirely oblivious of the peak oil issue, the risks it presents, and the scale of the response that would be necessary.

David Strahan FRSA, author of The Last Oil Shock, is an award winning investigative journalist and documentary-maker specialising in difficult business and science stories, working for 10 years on the BBC’s Money Programme and Horizon. David will be introduced by Chris Mason, who last November completed a TPS Young Transport Planner’s bursary report on peak oil, the effect it could have on transport, and the implications for transport planning practice in UK.

This event is taking place on Wednesday 22 April, 1830 for an 1845 start at the Palmer Room, Institution of Civil Engineers, One Great George Street, London SW1.
