The Department for Transport has just launched the national consultation on the revised Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD).
The revisions are extensive and will provide greater flexibility and cut costs for local authorities. It includes new signing policies and consolidates other regulations – to simplify the signing system and to make a significant contribution to the Government’s Red Tape Challenge. It will provide local authorities with greater discretion about the design and placement of traffic signs, within a national consistent framework. We will also remove most of the requirement for the Secretary of State to authorise non-prescribed signs, enable traffic authorities to reduce the number of traffic signs cluttering the highways and allow them to introduce schemes that encourage safer cycling.
The draft Schedules remain a work in progress and are still subject to our necessary legal checking procedures. They do represent the changes to content and structure and, by sharing them with you now, we can deliver these regulations sooner and realise these benefits more quickly.

Please note that the consultation closes on 12 June 2014. Department officials are presenting these changes at a number of regional Road Shows. More details on these Road Shows is available at
