The Parliamentary Advisory Committee on Transport Safety is holding a conference, Achieving safety, sustainability and health goals on 16 October at the Royal College of Surgeons.

With local authorities taking on responsibility for public health, and many local authorities merging road safety and sustainable transport teams for reasons of policy and economy, the worlds of road safety, sustainable transport and public health are increasingly intertwined. Health & Wellbeing Boards talk about transport; and transport professionals are expected to tackle health problems as well as to reduce carbon emissions and casualties.

The PACTS conference will demonstrate the synergies and tensions between these three sectors. One in four children in Birmingham may now suffer from obesity – a major driver in Birmingham’s active travel strategy. In London, Boris Johnson has set a 40% KSI casualty reduction target by 2020. How is that to be delivered alongside the substantial growth in walking and cycling in London? What can the private sectors offer and what is the contribution of public transport?

Speakers from these cities and elsewhere will explain how they are adjusting to the new challenges and finding ways of delivering on these new agendas. Following the House of Commons debate on Get Britain Cycling, this timely conference will bring together experts from across the sectors to explore practical ways in which more joined up working can reach these goals.
