TPS has responded to DfT’s call for Evidence on the Government’s Review of the Balance of Competencies between the United Kingdom and the European Union – or to put it more simply – what has been the impact of EU membership on the transport sector?

EU influence pervades many aspects of the UK transport scene. In some cases the influence is direct such as in EU funding for projects; in other cases the effects may perhaps be less foreseeable as the consequences of changes in EU Regulations take hold. The TPS response aimed to highlight some of the benefits and disbenefits of EU membership to the transport planning profession and to transport operators.

The response focused on a small number of disparate areas of the transport sector where members have a special interest including:
  • Effects of EU membership on transport investment in the UK
  • EU funding for university research in transport
  • EU stimulus for ITS
  • EU lead for travel planning
  • Public transport operators from other Member States in the UK
  • Opportunities for the transport planning profession arising from EU membership
  • Adverse impact on UK hauliers of the single market
