The Transport Planning Society’s bursary scheme aims to encourage transport planners at an early stage in their career to produce a piece of structured thought on a topic of current relevance to transport planning.

The Society is focusing the call for bursary applications on our theme for 2013:

How can transport best support economic growth?

The UK continues to face significant economic challenges and the government has placed a strong emphasis on funding new transport infrastructure as part of its recovery plan. However, the evidence on the links between transport and economic growth is not clear cut. In some cases the improved accessibility resulting from infrastructure investment has led to significant regeneration benefits but new infrastructure may not always be the best way to stimulate growth.

The TPS Bursary scheme gives you the opportunity to contribute to this debate. Applicants might want to consider the following issues when proposing a topic for their bursary: To what extent is new transport infrastructure essential to support economic growth? Is new transport infrastructure likely to guarantee economic growth? Can we stimulate growth through better management of existing transport infrastructure? To what extent can demand management be used to stimulate economic growth?

Applicants are asked to frame a specific title and subject for their bursary paper, of their own choice, relevant to the theme and to transport planning in the UK.

The value of the bursary is £500 and up to 5 awards will be made.  The best paper will be awarded a prize for “Bursary of the Year”, to be presented at the TPS AGM in February 2014.

The required output will be a paper 3-5,000 words in length, and associated presentation to the TPS Board, requiring about 7 days’ work.  The TPS will provide a mentor for each successful applicant, to assist with the technical content of the work.  The completed work will be disseminated by the Society, who will also assist presentation of the findings more widely, if appropriate.  The bursaries provide a great opportunity to develop as a transport planning professional.
