MEMBERSHIP OF the Transport Planning Society has increased by more than 40% in the past two years, boosting numbers to more than 1,000. The rise in membership had been due primarily to moves by the TPS Board to extend the organisation’s scope, and new entrants to the profession coming from a broader range of academic disciplines. Other factors are the quality of TPS events and the appeal of TPS’s new Professional Development Scheme and Transport Planning Professional qualification to transport planners and consultancy firms.
Over the past two years, TPS has set up new regional branches in the North East, East Midlands, Scotland and Northern Ireland, while the West Midlands and Welsh branches have been promoted more actively. In addition, there has been a significant rise in the number of graduates with geography degrees opting to become transport planners. TPS chairman Victoria Hills said that geography graduates are among those who see the TPS as "their natural choice”, when choosing which professional institution to join.
"The increase in membership vindicates the very active approach we have taken to develop the services we offer transport planning professionals in all areas of the country,” Victoria said. “We believe that as the profile of the profession continues to change, with more and more people entering with a wide range of first degrees, membership will continue to grow."
She added: "The Professional Development Scheme and Transport Planning Professional qualification have also had a significant impact in attracting new members and extending TPS’s influence beyond our membership. Half the top 20 consultancies in NCE’s consultants file have obtained a licence for our PDS, as has Transport for London. We estimate that this means that TPS now has formal contacts with half the transport planners in the UK."
