A joint TPS and Independent Transport Commission event.

Location: The Godfrey Mitchell Lecture Theatre, Institution of Civil Engineers, One Great George Street, London, SW1P 3AA

Time: Refreshments at 6.00pm in the Brasserie. Event 6.30 – 8.00pm

The presentation and debate will be chaired by Dr David Quarmby CBE, former Chairman of the Independent Transport Commission, current Chairman of the RAC Foundation and a director at Colin Buchanan.  David Bayliss OBE will also provide his views on the research.

Complementing our Plane vs. Train event on 10 December, Dr David Quarmby CBE and David Bayliss OBE will lead a debate over the findings of a major new study of long distance domestic travel up to 2030.  The study, commissioned by the Independent Transport Commission, breaks the mould of single mode research and examines the interaction of long-distance travel by car, train, coach and air.

A model built by Professor Joyce Dargay, University of Leeds, a distinguished econometrician, has been used to examine the effect of a range of future scenarios, including:

• a range of GDP growth forecasts
• the construction of a high speed railway between London and the North
• fuel cost escalation
• increases in airline passenger duty
• hyper-efficient cars
• the introduction of national road charging

At a time of uncertainty about the medium-term effects of the economic recession, future fuel costs, shifts in popular attitudes and the strength of climate change interventions, the study provides a new framework for considering the future of long distance travel within Britain.
