Transport Planners call for all schemes approved in Road Investment Strategy 2 to be reviewed

The Transport Planning Society (TPS) has urged the government to review all of the road schemes previously approved in the Road Investment Strategy 2

The Society made the recommendation in its statement on the Road Investment Strategy 3 which will cover the 2025-30 period, which is currently in the research stage.

Tom van Vuren, Director of Policy at the Transport Planning Society, said:

“The latest Department for Transport Road Traffic Forecasts are now more than 3 years old, and uncertainty should be at the heart of road investment related decision-making.

“In that context, it makes sense to review all schemes approved in the previous Road Investment Strategy (RIS). RIS3 offers the opportunity to improve travel conditions not just for private car and freight traffic, but across all modes of travel that make use of roads.

“Investing into local roads and active travel rather than the Strategic Road Network is one way of reducing the need to travel and improving conditions for all modes.”
