We are delighted to see that the TPS's Director of Policy, Tom van Vuren, has been awarded an honorary MBE for his services to transport. Being a foreign national, this award was made outside the two usual dates for these – the Birthday Honours and the New Years Honours.

On receiving his award, Tom van Vuren said:

“What pleases me most is that a colleague in my professional transport planning circle has taken the effort to make a case for this honour, that recognises the importance of modelling and data, quantified evidence, for transport-related decision-making.

We may feel that at the moment transport is just a partisan football, and that headlines are the only things that matter; but once the political party conference season is over, I trust that common sense will return, and that transport planners will be listened to, addressing the big questions we face – climate change, levelling up, transport equity – with solid arguments based on domain knowledge and backed up by facts.”
