This year's Annual lecture following the AGM was a very well attended session where Michael Hurwitz, Director for Energy, Technology and International Development at the Department of Transport talked about "Hype and the Changing Face of Technology in Transport"
In a revealing and challenging presentation, DfT’s Director for Energy, Technology & International, Mike Hurwitz covered three key areas: energy, connectivity, and the shared economy. His key message was that the vehicle technology and access to them (mobility as a service) was changing very fast and had major implications for transport policy. These would vary hugely between areas, for example there may be increases in congestion in urban areas but new shared transport opportunities in rural areas. The question for TPS is what can transport planners do to ensure we get the best from innovation and avoid the pitfalls……
