Job Description

AECOM's London office is currently seeking a full time Transport Planning Consultant to sit within our South East Rail Planning Team. This role is a full time permanent role to be located in Aldgate, London. We value a healthy work life balance, as such we have the option of flexible working hours. London Aldgate is one of our central hubs for our global consultancy services, and is on the Hammersmith & City Line near Aldgate East Station. We work closely with our colleagues in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, as well as other offices. This is an exciting opportunity to join an accomplished team and work on a range of projects for a wide variety of clients, including Transport for London, Department for Transport, Network Rail, train operators and franchise bidders.

As a Transport Planning Consultant you will assist in the growth and development of the AECOM Transportation Team involving a combination of project work and business development. The candidate would be expected to demonstrate knowledge and experience of working on rail planning projects for the public and private sector. This work will include planning and evaluation of future public transport strategies and schemes, encompassing market analysis, strategic modelling, demand and revenue forecasting, economic appraisal and business case development, leading to the development of rail scheme business cases. Typically this work will involve working with clients both within and outside the rail industry, ranging from involvement in franchise bidding through to supporting third party rail scheme promoters.

Clearly a wide knowledge of the rail industry would therefore be beneficial as our portfolio of work ranges from demand forecasting, to rail strategy development, scheme appraisal, market analysis, business impact and operational assessment.

 

Your responsibilities as a Rail Transport Planning Consultant will include:

  • Delivering high quality technical tasks independently and under supervision from more senior staff;

  • Working with and supervising more junior staff;

  • Developing Technical and Financial Proposals on new projects;

  • Assisting with business development activities;

  • Undertake project management, including cost control and client liaison;

  • Interact and co-ordinate with other business lines; and

  • Contributing to technical client reports and presentations.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Good technical writing capability;

  • Experience of working with and presenting to clients;

  • University Degree in relevant subject

  • Capability to set out specific tasks and self-motivation and capability to undertake specific tasks with minimum supervision;

  • The ability to manage larger tasks or small/medium sized projects;

  • Capability to set out and produce quality client reports;

  • Proven experience in a number of areas within transport planning; and

  • Knowledge of project budgetary issues and the capability to deliver work to time and budget.

  • Specific Skills Required:

  • Candidates will need an understanding of the principles of public transport planning, including:

  • Familiarity with WebTAG and the Passenger Demand Forecasting Handbook;

  • Experience in transport modelling using EMME/CUBE software, demand forecasting using MOIRA and the use of LENNON data would be advantageous but not essential;

  • Knowledge of the UK public transport industry;

  • Excellent spreadsheet skills; and

  • Wider public transport knowledge (e.g. operations, rolling stock, performance) would be useful but not essential.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Membership or working towards membership of a chartered professional institution.

  • A master’s degree or PhD in Transport Planning or related subject/social based discipline is desirable but not essential
