The Highway and Transport Planning Sector is one of Arcadis' core markets, a position it has held throughout our 150 year history, and we pride ourselves on delivering new and exciting solutions for transportation infrastructure design and construction schemes. 

Our Sector team is involved in some of the UK’s most high profile, complex and stimulating projects that are diverse and technically demanding. We have an enviable reputation in the delivery of some of the UK’s and indeed the world’s most prestigious and challenging projects. Our current client portfolio includes the Department of Transport, Transport for Scotland, the Highways Agency, Transport for London, Borough Councils, Civil Engineering Contractors and International Governments, for whom we undertake the planning, design and supervision of civil engineering and transport solutions to exceed our client’s requirements. 

Requirements:

We are seeking to recruit a Technical Director to be based from our London or Guildford office, to take a key role in providing leadership and overview for all assigned projects. To be considered, we are seeking candidates with the following credentials:

Minimum Academic Qualifications:

  • Relevant engineering degree with consulting experience
  • Post graduate qualification 
  • Chartered (or equivalent) member of an appropriate professional institution

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Postgraduate qualifications in business, finance or project management related areas an advantage

Essential Experience:

  • Recognised leader in Transport Planning/Traffic Engineering, with well-established industry networks and proven leadership skills
  • Proven ability to network and influence at peer levels
  • Well-developed commercial skills
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills, both internally and externally
  • Effective sales and marketing skills
  • In-depth understanding of Transport Planning software applications including SATURN, CUBE, VISSIM. VISUM
  • An upstanding of Economical Appraisal and Business Case Development – TUBA
  • Fully WEBTAG conversant

Duties & Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Business Director you will take a key role in projects within Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering, providing technical leadership and overview as required, build a professional profile and reputation, for self and for Arcadis, in the industry and establish and consolidate relationships with clients, both during the project and after completion, to become a trusted partner, promoting value-add solutions.

You will use your technical knowledge to identify and realise new client opportunities and to provide technical input into the bidding process, manage the delivery of specialised components of projects, advising on  the most effective team to achieve this, be fully engaged with and utilise Arcadis Global Excellence Centres (GECs) as key members and resources of your teams, and as a seamless part of our service offering and lead the technical development of staff, coaching and mentoring on technical issues and assisting with chartered institution membership.

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

Technical Leadership

  • Keeping up to date with technical and legislative developments and seek opportunities to develop  professional profile (giving presentations to relevant conferences/meetings/professional bodies and participation in technical committees for trade organisations and standards) 
  • Building effective and enduring relationships with other Arcadis offices and external organisations to foster co-operation and maximise cross-sell and trade-up opportunities in relevant specialist field
  • Maintaining an in-depth and up-to-date understanding of the client businesses, their drivers and competitors, to be able to build rapport and establish respect and trust  
  • Using knowledge of client businesses and competition to provide input and competitive focus during the bid process
  • Providing technical expertise and overview to client and stakeholders and to assist clients through technical decision-making and provide alternatives options/solutions if there are changes to project objectives
  • Providing reassurance, confidence and a sense of direction to both client and project team members 
  • Assisting in the development of Arcadis' talent through coaching and mentoring and through the Professional Excellence Groups – encourage and model innovation, entrepreneurial thinking and the drive to exceed client’s expectations
  • Ensuring implementation of health and safety in all aspects of design and operations

Operational Management

  • Using understanding of the technical challenges and client business to form the most effective team 
  • Working with client and stakeholders to ensure clear understanding of project objectives and to set protocols for working together
  • Communicating with team members to ensure that they understand, and become engaged with, the project strategy, brief and client requirements
  • Championing the involvement and inclusion of the GDCs in sector work by ensuring that staff understand the benefits and requirement of the inclusion of the GDCs as a seamless part of our service offering
  • Seeking and documenting regular feedback from clients on the quality of Arcadis performance, technical solutions and delivery and advise on the appropriate mitigation as required
  • Undertaking technical reviews for projects
  • Performing other duties and responsibilities as required from time to time by your manager or Arcadis
