Assistant Transport Modeller, Manchester

Job Description

About the Role

Think bigger scale. Think higher profile. Think groundbreaking. Join WSP, and you’ll be at the heart of a team of international experts all dedicated to growing and sharing their expertise, and working on projects that transform society for all of us.

Regionally, we operate through our northern offices in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow. We are seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Transport Modeller to provide support to the transportation modelling capability in the North West.  The person will be based in the Manchester office and will contribute to the delivery of projects for our public-sector clients including Transport for the North, Highways England, TfGM, City of Leeds, City of Newcastle and a range of local authorities across the region.

We have the UK’s largest team of development and transport planners, all dedicated to enabling our clients to create viable and deliverable developments which provide lasting social and environmental improvements.

We advise our clients from the earliest stages of development. We can unlock development land previously considered uneconomic or technically challenging, and are proud of our reputation for working with other professional teams to produce cost-effective, integrated solutions.

Though our pioneering work on applying movement frameworks and street design concepts to masterplans, and our research in transport policy and our intelligent transport system designs, we’re able to create places that respond to the needs of all stakeholders.

We act as strategic advisors and expert witnesses, specialising at all stages from pre-acquisition studies to delivery. Our clients draw on our transport modelling and planning capabilities to deliver evidence to support the planning functions of local authorities and create sustainable transport investment plans.

A typical week would include:

  • Providing technical support on a diverse range of modelling projects
  • Contributing to the wider Modelling team through other inputs such as data analysis, network development, matrix construction methods, forecast projections and appraisal techniques
  • Working on a range of different projects such as model build projects, business cases, Local Plans and strategies

About You

You will have a good understanding of transport modelling and its subsequent application in operational and appraisal.  You will be expected to support the delivery of a wide range of projects encompassing highway and public transport model development, analysis and application.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • A degree in relevant spatial or numerical subject, at Grade 2:1 or above
  • An understanding of transport modelling techniques
  • Experience of providing input to strategic modelling projects including model development and application
  • Understanding of UK modelling and appraisal guidance
  • An appreciation of future trends within the transport modelling industry
  • The ability to produce high quality inputs into project reports, including technical documents and visualisations to convey outcomes

The following skills/qualifications are desirable:

  • Holding or working towards Chartered status in organisations including CIHT / TPS / ICE / CILT;
  • Post-graduate degree in Transportation Modelling, Planning or other relevant subject;
  • Experience of data science and programming
  • Competence in GIS techniques; and
  • Full and clean driving license.
