Job Description

About the Role

Think bigger scale. Think higher profile. Think groundbreaking. Join WSP, and you’ll be at the heart of a team of international experts all dedicated to growing and sharing their expertise, and working on projects that transform society for all of us.

Regionally, we operate through our northern offices in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow. We are seeking an enthusiastic Senior Transport Planner to provide support to the transportation planning capability in the North West.  The person will be based in the Manchester or Liverpool office and will contribute to the delivery of projects for our public sector clients. Particularly strong candidates may be considered for a Principal Transport Planner position.

We have the UK’s largest team of development and transport planners, all dedicated to enabling our clients to create viable and deliverable developments which provide lasting social and environmental improvements.

We advise our clients from the earliest stages of development. We can unlock development land previously considered uneconomic or technically challenging, and are proud of our reputation for working with other professional teams to produce cost-effective, integrated solutions.

Though our pioneering work on applying movement frameworks and street design concepts to masterplans, and our research in transport policy and our intelligent transport system designs, we’re able to create places that respond to the needs of all stakeholders.

We act as strategic advisors and expert witnesses, specialising at all stages from pre-acquisition studies to delivery. Our clients draw on our transport modelling and planning capabilities to deliver evidence to support the planning functions of local authorities and create sustainable transport investment plans.

We also work with the public sector, delivering on policy commitments and funding applications. We create large scale transport models that assist strategic planning decisions and transport investment.

Our interpretation of the latest regulatory requirements, Planning Policy guidelines, knowledge of current best practice and our wealth of technical expertise means we can identify and assess development opportunities that deliver.

You will have a good understanding of transport planning, and the versatility to apply your skills in transport policy and scheme development.  You will be expected to not only provide transport planning expertise but also start to apply project and staff management skills as part of your daily role.

A typical week would include:

  • You will be able to demonstrate a range of technical skills covering aspects such as transport policy and strategy, feasibility studies, option assessment and business cases.  You can expect to be involved on a number of projects at any given time, so the ability to manage competing priorities is essential.
  • You will have experience in leading your own project work, including monitoring performance against budgets and programme and delegating appropriate tasks to junior team members. Given our regional structure you will be flexible to working on projects across our northern offices.
  • You will provide support to a number of senior staff as well as developing your own project management, commercial and work winning skills. You will assist in the management and training of our Graduates and Apprentices where appropriate.

About You

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • Degree in relevant spatial or numerical subject, at Grade 2:1 or above;

The following skills are essential:

  • A good understanding of transport project development processes;
  • Experience of the production and review of transport plans and strategies, feasibility studies, Option Assessment Reports and Business Cases
  • Working knowledge of transport guidance and current best practice (such as WebTAG);
  • Working knowledge of current transport policy at sub-regional, regional and national level;
  • The ability to think at both strategic and detailed levels;
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills and excellent working knowledge of MS Office tools
  • Ability to produce high quality project reports, including technical documents;
  • Ability to communicate technical arguments to technical and non-technical clients; and present outputs from studies to range of audiences.

The following skills/qualifications are desirable:

  • Working towards Chartered Engineer/TPP status;
  • Post-graduate degree in Transportation Planning or other relevant subject;
  • Experience of traffic engineering and modelling;
  • Competence in GIS techniques; and
  • Full and clean driving license.

If not already achieved, the candidate will be expected to work towards professional accreditation
