About the Role

Job Summary

An experienced Associate level Transport Planner is required to provide project, leadership and line management support to the transportation planning capability in the WSP Birmingham office and across the midlands region. The person will be based in Birmingham and be expected to lead the development of Transport Planning projects. This will include day to day management of project teams, along with identifying and delivering new client opportunities. The role requires development of the client base for the region with a particular focus on the public sector.You will have an extensive understanding of transport planning, and the versatility to apply your skills in traffic modelling, traffic engineering, transport policy and governance and transport planning across all modes of transport. You will have experience and an in depth understanding of developing projects to meet public sector client expectations, programmes and budgets. You would also be expected to have extensive experience of managing complex transport projects for a range of public sector clients, and be able to demonstrate skills in the commercial aspects of bidding, winning and delivering successful projects from early stages of concepts through to delivery. The successful candidate will lead in developing a wider transport planning capability through key roles on existing transportation projects and framework contracts and via wider inputs to internal and external clients.

Core Functions:

  • Secure project wins from existing and potential new clients in the Midlands region;
  • Work with the Discipline Team Leader to develop a strategic action plan across 1 and 3 year time periods;
  • Mentor transport planning team members to support their career development;
  • Contribute to the delivery of WSP business strategy for the region, which includes meeting productivity targets, widening our client base and growing the team;
  • Liaison with team leaders from other disciplines in region to identify opportunities and transfer market knowledge;
  • Project management of transport planning projects being delivered by virtual teams for range of clients, ensuring they are delivered to high standard, within budget and on programme;
  • Attendance at client meetings as required by project and business development activities;
  • Responsibility for resourcing, attending resourcing meetings, securing team workload and meeting budgeted team productivity targets;
  • Responsibility for identifying and managing team training, carrying out appraisals and approval of leave;
  • Leading transport planning bids, involvement in transport planning and other bids and technical input to marketing materials as required.
  • Line management responsibilities including regular informal and formal career and professional reviews.

About You

The following skills are essential:

  • Proven ability to develop and service a productive client work base
  • Proven track record in managing transport planning projects;
  • In depth understanding of the Transport Appraisal and scoping transport requirements of multi-disciplinary projects
  • Scoping the Strategic and Local Modelling Assessmentso develop and prepare Feasibility Studies, Detailed Project Reports of various rail, roadand public transportation related projects.
  • To develop and prepare the strategies related to traffic management systems, transport demand management, Intelligent Transportation System, on street parking, off street parking, non-motorised user studies
  • To develop and preparation of integration, coordination, guiding of various stakeholderprojects, plans, studies, etc
  • Significant experience in ccheme assessment, optioneering, modelling approaches and business case
  • Knowledge of transport guidance and best practice (WebTAG, DMRB, TAN 18 etc.)
  • Numerical ability and capability in data analysis and use of MS Excel;
  • Ability to produce project reports, including technical documents;
  • Knowledge and interpretation of strategic modelling (e.g. SATURN, VISUM, CUBE etc)
  • Knowledge and application of traffic modelling (e.g. Junctions 8, VISSIM, Paramics.
  • Experience of liaising with and securing approvals from LA’s, LEPs, DfT, HA and other funding bodies.
  • Ability to communicate technical arguments to technical and non-technical clients, and present outputs from studies to range of audiences.
