Updates to the Portfolio of Technical Knowledge for TPP Candidates

The TPP Professional Standards Committee has approved two important updates to the Portfolio of Technical Knowledge (PTK), which is one of the routes to the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) qualification.

From July 2025, the word count for each TPP Portfolio of Technical Knowledge (PTK) unit will increase to 750 words (+/-10%), and candidates will now be required to include a sponsor statement as part of their submission. This must be from someone who is familiar with and understands the competences and standards required.  These changes are designed to improve the clarity and robustness of submissions and to support candidates in demonstrating their technical knowledge more effectively.

The TPP qualification is jointly awarded by the Transport Planning Society and CIHT. It recognises the professional competence of transport planners and is a benchmark for excellence in the sector. Candidates can apply via several routes, including an approved MSc, the TPS Professional Development Scheme (PDS), or the PTK route. Because CIHT has a Royal Charter, transport planners who achieve TPP are entitled to apply to them for the Chartered Transport Planning Professional title (CTPP)

The PTK route is designed for those who wish to demonstrate their underpinning technical knowledge through written evidence. It is particularly suitable for candidates who have gained experience through practice rather than an accredited MSc.

The increase in word count reflects feedback from candidates and assessors who felt that the previous 500-word limit was too restrictive. The additional word count will allow candidates to provide more detailed and well-referenced responses, helping assessors to better assess the depth of understanding.

The new sponsor statement requirement is intended to strengthen the integrity of submissions. Sponsors should be familiar with the candidate’s work and able to confirm that the evidence provided is a true reflection of their knowledge and experience.

These changes are part of the Committee’s ongoing work to ensure that the PTK route remains an effective pathway to TPP. They also help to align the PTK route more closely with the expectations of other professional qualifications.  The Committee is currently considering further guidance on the extent to which every element of the guidance needs to be met to ensure consistency and maintain the breadth of knowledge required.
