Job Description

We are currently looking for a dynamic Public Realm Engineer to join our Transportation Public Realm team, in the Development and Cities Space business, at Technical Director level. It is an exciting time for the Transportation Public Realm team as it is a growing business and this role offers the opportunity for the successful candidate to be a central figure in the expansion of the team.

An important aspect of the role will be helping to drive the business forward by proactively seeking new opportunities and developing strong relationships with a range of clients. Being a key member of the team, the role requires the candidate to deliver to the highest technical and behavioural standards. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in managing and delivering complex projects to a high standard across the disciplines of Public Realm and Traffic Engineering. They will have the ability to deliver scheme designs from the initial concept through the subsequent design stages of preliminary, detailed and construction design. This role will be based in Birmingham but working across London, the South East and Nationally.  

 

Our office is located in the heart of Birmingham. The team has a strong current workload and excellent presence within the marketplace. The team forms part of the wider national Transport Planning & Urban Development business. The overall team has a wide-ranging capability: from site feasibility and masterplanning, through to planning and then detailed design. The multi-disciplinary nature of the business also means that we are able to deliver project teams from disciplines wider than transportation to offer clients a true ‘one stop shop’.

 

Our Development team is involved in a number of high profile projects with a variety of clients both in the UK and overseas, including Transport for London, Crossrail, Royal Borough of Greenwich, London Boroughs of Merton, Harrow, Hackney, Barking & Dagenham, Croydon, Homes England, Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council, National Grid, HS2 and Network Rail. Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international projects.

 Requirements:

We are seeking to recruit a career minded Technical Director - Public Realm Engineer who has gained solid work experience on transport, land development and infrastructure projects and who possesses the following credentials:

Minimum Academic Qualifications: 

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)   

Desirable Academic Qualifications: 

  • Chartered or working towards Chartership of a relevant professional body 

Essential Experience: 

  • Appropriate previous experience of working in design and implementation of urban highway, transport and public realm schemes, including cycle schemes, bus priority projects, high street improvements, signalised junctions and road safety schemes
  • Development of scheme designs from concept through detailed design to construction design. This is to include drawings suitable for public consultation and full detailed design drawing packages
  • A network of existing contacts within the industry and a proven ability to win business
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering technically excellent projects
  • Project management experience for large public realm and traffic engineering schemes
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build and maintain client relationships at the highest level
  • A strong commercial focus
  • Experience of 3D design and construction of 3D ground models
  • Experience of drainage design
  • Experience in traffic sign design
  • Site supervision
  • Preparation of Rough Order of Magnitude costs and detailed Bills of Quantities
  • Working knowledge of CDM regulations
  • Willingness to travel to projects across the UK when required
  • Excellent project and people management skills with a hands-on attitude to technical project work
  • Mentoring and development of more junior members of staff   

Desirable Experience:   

  • Design of temporary traffic management during construction
  • Appreciation of junction modelling and GIS packages
  • ProjectWise / BIM Standards
  • Sign design using AutoSign or equivalent
  • Full driving licence                      

 Duties & Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Practice Lead for City Space, you will provide leadership and technical support into assigned projects ensuring successful delivery of technically challenging Public Realm, Transport, Traffic and Infrastructure schemes. As we operate in such a diverse marketplace, we can safely say that you will gain an experience of working on a wide and varied portfolio of projects which will enhance your skills and test your technical knowledge.

You will work in collaboration with other disciplines and will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of schemes, overseas projects, research projects and innovative, technically challenging work.

The role will include the following responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for developing new and existing client relationships and winning new business
  • Ensure that projects are completed to client specifications, to budgets and deadlines
  • Contribute to and deliver the business strategy for the company in association with other directors
  • Provide leadership and act as mentor to junior members of staff
  • Act as technical lead and key point of contact for projects within the company as required
  • Working in collaboration with other design disciplines to ensure the integrity of the overall design
  • Lead best practice to peers and wider professional audience and raise the profile of the Transport Planning business within Arcadis and wider industry
  • Delivery of high quality of outputs and proactive promotion of appropriate quality standards
  • Becoming familiar with, and compliant with, relevant Health and Safety regulations and to promote a culture of awareness within the team
