Location: 5 Endeavour Square, Stratford
Salary: Competitive Salary + Performance Related Bonus
Permanent position
Are you a transport modeller who wants to change London for the better?
At Transport for London our purpose is to keep London moving, working and growing and to make life in our city better. We pride ourselves on our world leading analysis and evidence led approach. We are recruiting for a transport modeller to provide the evidence base that underpins the Mayor of London's healthy streets agenda. With our strong heritage and world- recognised brand, we believe we're a great place for you to develop your career.
ABOUT US
City Planning helps craft London’s future. We provide strategic direction through the London Plan and Mayor’s Transport Strategy to improve the city’s transport offer, enable its future growth and secure better health and environmental outcomes.
Strategic Analysis is a department of around 50 analysts and modellers who are pivotal to the work of City Planning and ensure TfL’s decisions are grounded in the best available evidence. You will be joining the Streets Analysis team who use models to understand and forecast vehicle and cycle movement on the road network. We have responsibility for the maintenance and improvement of TfL’s strategic modelling capability, as well as conducting broader analysis to inform the development of major schemes, policies and growth areas.
ABOUT THE ROLES
You will be a Modeller in a team of technical experts developing TfL’s strategic modelling capability, and contributing to robust model development and applications to support strategy, policy and scheme assessment in relation to London’s streets. We are looking for a new team member to support our work on modelling the road network but there is also scope to get involved in the analysis of London’s freight and servicing industries as well as pedestrian activity and cycling modelling.
Your immediate challenges will include:
• Learning in-depth about TfL’s industry leading Highway Assignment Models and their uses in scheme assessment
• Assisting with the further development of the models including reviewing alternative software platforms and methodological approaches to ensure we keep up to date with developments in the industry
• Conducting secondary analysis using the models, and complementary datasets, to provide evidence and insight on who is moving around the network. This will facilitate the development of schemes that work towards achieving the ambitious mode shift aims of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy
• Building productive relationships across the TfL modelling community to ensure a high standard of coordinated multi-modal analysis is undertaken to support TfL’s policy and scheme development
ABOUT YOU
First and foremost we need agile problem solvers who can get to grips with complex questions quickly and want to be part of a team that is working to change London.
You will need:
• a first degree (& preferably a second) in a quantitative discipline (or a proven equivalent level of experience);
• skills in problem solving and developing technical methods to further organisational needs;
• a track-record of working with others to develop analytical methods to address transport planning problems;
• an understanding of the principles of demand and highway assignment modelling;
• ideally experience in using strategic modelling techniques and an awareness of the data requirements, appraisal techniques and industry standards.
Beyond your technical skills, you will have:
• a familiarity with policy development and the challenges facing transport in London;
• communication skills to explain complex technical outputs to a non-technical audience;
• experience in preparing and delivering presentational material to explain your findings.
Skills in GIS and/or programming languages would be an advantage.
Experience in using Saturn and / or Aimsun is desirable but a willingness to learn is essential
