We are seeking to recruit an Associate to join our Transport team in either Southampton, Basingstoke or Guildford. The team undertakes transport and infrastructure projects for a range of public and private sector clients. We work closely with our Planning, Highways, Structures, Environmental, Rail and Property teams. We are looking for a suitable experienced and skilled person to be part of our growing team taking forward exciting opportunities.

Your key role will be as a Project Manager to provide support for the development of the initial stages of major transport schemes, provide support to senior members of the WSP transport team and act as Transport Service Manager for our Professional Services contract with West Sussex County Council. The variety of projects will vary in both scale and nature, making the workload extremely interesting. The position will involve leading & supporting people and teams in managing the work to produce deliverables required for projects to achieve planning consents, as well as producing Transport Assessments, inputs to Environment Impact Assessments and other general advice on developments and schemes.

A typical week would include:

  • Project Management & Support for multi-disciplinary projects;
  • Producing transport assessments and overseeing modelling;
  • Overseeing Business Case work;
  • Working on multi-disciplinary projects;
  • Developing scheme options and understanding engineering feasibility; and
  • Leading stakeholder and community consultation.

About You

We'd love to hear from you if you:

  • Have some experience of transport planning and infrastructure delivery at an intermediate level with project management training and qualifications being desirable
  • Are well versed in the preparation of quality transport assessments, engineering feasibility, the interface with other teams (particularly environment and planning teams) and managing these interfaces
  • Have skills and experience in a range of transport and development related work types
  • Have knowledge of areas such as infrastructure planning and policies at local, regional and national level
  • Have the ability to think at both strategic and detailed levels
  • Have knowledge of wider engineering disciplines to ensure effective client relationships

Good client relationship skills, project management and business development will be essential. Financial management will be required on individual projects to ensure efficient use of resources and up to date billing. Producing fee proposals and undertaking business development will be a key part of the role. The position reports to a Technical Director. The post holder will also be responsible for people within the team, including their development and project outputs.

You will have a track record in transport planning and/or engineering infrastructure with an appropriate professional qualification. Effective communication and consultation skills on technical matters with stakeholders is essential. 

You will need to have good written and spoken communication skills and be able to work as part of a team or individually. An enthusiasm for and genuine interest in Transport Planning and Engineering is essential to allow a close fit with our highly motivated team. We are looking for someone who is able to develop as the team grows as part of our exciting opportunity to grow our Infrastructure Planning team.
