A Senior Transport Modeller is required to augment an expanding Strategic Modelling Team serving clients across our northern region that is also supportive of initiatives nationally. to be based in our Leeds Office. The opportunity will help support existing workloads for a range of regional clients in South, West and North Yorkshire, the East Midlands and Tyne & Wear and support regional framework successes with TfGM, WYCA and NEPO.

The transport team in Leeds offers clients a wide range of multi-disciplinary and cross-sector services including but not limited to; strategic modelling and economic assessment, micro-simulation modelling; signal design, transport assessments, scheme business cases and appraisals, land use modelling, local junction design, road safety audits and site appraisals, master-planning, public transport studies and public consultation.

A typical week would include:

The successful candidate will be working within a highly skilled transport modelling team, known for providing client-ready solutions based on technical competence and expertise. The team currently has a range of regional highway and public transport modelling projects, micro simulation modelling, scheme appraisal and development assessment work. These are for a variety of clients, including local authorities, government bodies, LEPs and enterprise partnerships and private developers, with an expanding international portfolio.

The role presents an excellent opportunity to progress your career and work within a successful team on a wide range of regionally, nationally and internationally based transport planning and modelling projects, with opportunities to diversify transport modelling outputs and techniques into new and innovative markets and products.

You will be joining a fast growing and creative team, working on projects in the northern region, all across the UK and internationally. Whatever your interest there is something here for you.

You will need to be flexible with working arrangements and it may be necessary to work from other regional offices and/or client offices as project work requires.

Core Functions:

  • Task leader on strategic modelling projects; expected to lead smaller, in-house project tasks
  • Transport model development and appraisal. Tasks may include but not limited to model building, calibration/validation, model testing and auditing, checking and analysis of model outputs, and developing and testing schemes/ land use changes in a variety of models
  • Delivery to timescales, budget and technical quality
  • Preparation of technical reports and proposals for clients
  • Client support- articulate delivery of modelling results, and support specification study progression
  • Attendance at internal and client team meetings, with direct reporting to them.
  • Contribute to our process of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing relating to transport modelling across our national transport planning business
  • To work to a high technical standard.

About You

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • A degree (or equivalent) in a numerate or transport discipline
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • In-depth experience in developing transport models from first principles, and in appraisal
  • Knowledge of transport policy and appraisal issues and techniques, and how transport modelling can be used to support and enhance other areas of transport planning and policy.
  • Ability to independently devise study methodology
  • Proven ability to build, calibrate and validate, and apply transport models with minimum supervision
  • Detailed knowledge and experience in the use of at least two of the following modelling packages: Cube Voyager, TRIPS, SATURN, EMME, DIADEM.
  • Understanding of UK WebTAG and DMRB requirements.
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS Office tools, particularly MS Excel/ ACCESS.
  • Some experience in TUBA, COBA, QUADRO, VBA programming or similar and experience of programming bespoke analysis tools
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and independently with limited supervision
  • Ability to work under pressure

This role will include contributing to projects across sectors and geographies (with potential international opportunities) for both public and private sector clients, so a dynamic approach to work including the ability to deal with a diverse workload and prioritise tasks and projects accordingly is desirable.

You will liaise with clients and across teams, actively contributing to the delivery of both technical and commercial excellence, meeting budget, programme and technical standards and meet QA, CDM and HSE requirements.

Desirable Skills

  • Transport related MSc - with transport Modelling modules/ experience
  • Experience in GIS techniques- ArcGIS
  • Experience with VISSIM, AIMSUM or Paramics
  • Professional membership of a relevant institution
