Principal Transport Planner (Forecasting)

Job Description

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) oversees public transport in Greater Manchester, delivering and improving transport services, facilities and information to make travel easier for everyone. This is a busy and exciting time for us: under the devolution agreement, and with Greater Manchester at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse, transport will play a vital role in supporting growth and prosperity in the UK’s largest regional economy outside London.

Our works spans a wide range of programmes across all modes of transport and TfGM’s Modelling and Appraisal team is becoming involved in new activities, so we’re looking to adapt and evolve our forecasting skills to meet the demands arising from the GM Bee Network ambitions. The team you will join has an integral role in assembling good quality evidence to support the decision making process at TfGM.

As Senior or Principal Transport Planner in the Forecasting team within Modelling and Analysis you’ll work to gain insight and knowledge from large datasets from a wide range of information sources and use transport modelling systems to create compelling evidence that helps shape the future of how people will travel in Greater Manchester. You will be required to be flexible in your work and to have an ability to be proactive when required. Working with colleagues in the team, you will use many of the forecasting tools that are commonly used across the industry and will work closely with internal partners throughout TfGM.

This is hybrid role where you will be expected to work in the office 2 days per week.

The successful candidate will help build, maintain and apply transport modelling tools and techniques used by TfGM in the context of working in a busy transport planning and analysis department. For those interested in this role, we can offer an unrivalled package that includes:

  • Mentorship by an experienced management and leadership team
  • The opportunity to build your career with excellent learning and development opportunities that can include progress towards professional accreditation.
  • We frequently work with peers across the UK, including the DfT and in academia. This role will give you the chance to develop your network of contacts across the local and national transport appraisal and forecasting community.
  • The chance for you to join a talented team with a genuine aspiration to improve transport options in Greater Manchester and a great team spirit.
  • At TfGM we encourage candidates to discuss flexible working options at any stage of the recruitment process.
