Open to all those studying or working in transport planning, or related fields, on a professional basis.

The Transport Planning Society is delighted to shine a spotlight on the University of Westminster, one of the UK’s longest-established providers of transport planning education. The University has been teaching transport planning since the early 1970s and offers courses designed for both those already working in the sector and those new to it. Its programmes emphasise the development of practical skills, underpinned by an appropriate level of theory, enabling students to ask the right questions, use evidence effectively and draw robust conclusions in professional practice.
Looking ahead to the autumn term, a number of key modules will be running that will be of particular interest to those developing their careers in transport planning or seeking to deepen their expertise.
Transport Policy and Politics runs on Tuesday mornings and is led by Dr Tom Cohen. The module introduces debates within transport policy and politics past, present and future. It draws on a range of disciplinary perspectives to place key controversies, ideas and issues within their wider theoretical, policy and political contexts. Students explore different levels and styles of decision-making, as well as the range of actors who influence policy development.
Transport Economics runs on Tuesday afternoons and is led by Dr Paulo Anciaes. This module examines the application of economic principles to the transport sector, including both core concepts and emerging areas of the field. Topics include appraisal and assessment techniques used in transport planning, pricing and costing of transport, the monitoring of performance and impacts of schemes and plans, and aspects of operational and commercial management within transport systems and services.
Analysing Transport Data runs on Thursday afternoons and is led by Professor Rachel Aldred. This module introduces the use of secondary quantitative data in a transport context. Participants work with real-world datasets, including police injury data, travel surveys and Census travel-to-work data, using advanced Excel techniques and specialist statistical software. The focus is on developing the ability to interpret, analyse and present data effectively to support transport decision-making.
The Transport Planning Society is pleased to support and highlight the continued contribution the University of Westminster makes to developing skills, knowledge and capability within the profession.
