Transport Planning Day 2020

Transport Planning Day 2020 took  place on the 16th of November with the 2020 campaign running completely online, to ensure everyone’s health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is Transport Planning Day?

The campaign was launched in 2018 to raise the profile of transport planning and its role in changing people's lives. It aims to engage communities on the role of transport planners and to celebrate the achievements of transport planning. 

The campaign runs throughout the year and takes place through a series of activities around the UK to put the profession in the spotlight. This includes a reception with MPs in the House of Parliament and Transport Planning Day, which is held in November each year.

A Climate Change theme for Transport Planning Day 2020

Transport Planning Day 2020 focused on the role of transport planners in tackling climate change and creating a sustainable, healthy future.

The transport sector is now the UK's leading source of greenhouse gas emissions. This puts transport planners at the forefront of addressing the climate crisis. At the same time there are fantastic transport planning initiatives around the UK that are focusing on how to make transport and travel more sustainable.

What happened this year?

A virtual Transport Planning Day event

The virtual Transport Planning Day event held on Monday 16th November featured Transport Minister, Rachel Maclean MP and the Mayor of London's Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Dr. Will Norman.

Reporting on the State of the Nations

To understand the current state of transport and make policy recommendations to governments and the profession, we published an inaugural State of the Nations report at a virtual Transport Planning Day Parliamentary Reception.

Inspiring the Transport Planners of the Future Poster Competition

We also wanted to look to the future to see how we can improve transport even further, which is why we ran a nationwide poster competition for school children in partnership with Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking.
