Register now for CIHT's webinar 'Transport-related social exclusion in the North of England'

New research by Transport for the North (TfN) reveals that 3.3 million people from across the North of England live in areas where there is a significant risk of transport-related social exclusion (TRSE). The North East has by far the highest level of risk of transport-related social exclusion of any region in England, with 31.5% of people living in areas with a high risk.

Dr Tom Jarvis is a researcher at Transport for the North, and leads TfN’s research and policy work on the social impacts of the transport system. At this seminar, Tom will outline the social impacts of the transport system in the North of England, with a particular focus on the issue of transport-related social exclusion (TRSE) in the North East. The talk will draw on new research from Transport for the North on the causes, consequences, and extent of social exclusion caused by transport issues in the North. This research included interviews, focus groups, and surveys with over 3,000 people across the North, engagement with expert stakeholders, and the development of a data tool to measure the risk of TRSE across local areas.

What questions will it answer?
How well does the transport system meet the needs of different population groups and area types? What does it mean to be socially excluded by transport issues, and why does this matter? How can we measure the social impacts of the transport system? How do these transport issues affect different populations and areas in the North East?

What issues will it deal with?
(1) An introduction to the social impacts of transport and the issue of transport-related social exclusion. (2) The methodological challenges in measuring the social impacts of transport, and how these can be overcome. (3) The population groups and area types most impacted by transport-related social exclusion. (4) How we can move to a more effective, inclusive, and equal transport system.

What information will it present?
The outcomes of primary research with populations across the North and of innovative data analysis on the social impacts of transport. This will include mapping, statistics, and qualitative insights.

What are the key learning outcomes?
(1) Why the inclusion and social impacts of the transport system matter. (2) What it means to be socially excluded because of transport issues. (3) The population groups and area types most affected by transport-related social exclusion. (4) The policies and investment required to achieve a more effective, inclusive, and equal transport system.
