New research published by TPS Board member, Jonathan Flower

TPS Board Member, Jonathan Flower, has recently published research which looks at the 'Effect of side road junction design enhancements and flows on priority for crossing pedestrians and cyclists'.

Design matters at side road junctions. What is the best way to enhance priority for crossing pedestrians and cyclists in support of the UK Highway Code which states that people crossing a side road have priority over drivers turning in or out of the side road?

Should we set back the crossing point away from the main road? Are two-way cycle tracks more dangerous than one-way? Why not put a zebra across every side road? Are there any unintended consequences of enhancing crossings at some side roads and not others?

These questions and others are answered in a recently published journal paper. The paper is based on research carried out by Dr Jonathan Flower and Emeritus Professor John Parkin of the Centre of Transport and Society, UWE, Bristol. It was funded by the Road Safety Trust and Transport Scotland in collaboration with Sustrans.
