The reform of bus services across the UK is creating new opportunities to rethink the design of bus networks, and to reinvent the role of the bus in developing more sustainable and equitable cities. Securing investment and funding to deliver improved bus services remains challenging, and rigorous and insightful analysis of access and the impact of changing networks is vital in making the case. Join us in person or online to discuss new approaches to bus network design with our expert panel:

Jarrett Walker, the author of the book Human Transit, has been the lead designer on more than 50 bus network design projects around the world, including the redesign of Dublin (now being implemented) and more recently for Ireland's other main cities: Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Waterford. These Irish projects have taken a distinctive approach, welcoming a high level of controversy in order to achieve dramatic change. Jarrett is a recognised leader in building understanding of bus services in urban planning, and has just co-authored a guidance note for the National Transport Authority of Ireland called "Planning Cities and Towns for Successful Bus Services." His book has just been reissued in a revised edition, updated to be more relevant to a global audience.

Nathan Koren is an architect and transport planner who founded Podaris in 2013 with a vision to revolutionise the way transport infrastructure and services are planned. The Podaris software platform is used by planners around the world to plan faster, smarter and more collaboratively - from city scale transport schemes and bus service improvement plans (BSIPs) to campus expansions. In the UK, Podaris has helped to secure millions in funding for local authorities by providing evidence-based analysis of existing and proposed networks. Across the world, Podaris has supported customers working on multi-billion pound projects. The platform has proudly been used to help plan more accessible and equitable transport systems for millions of people.

Mike Holmes (chair) leads WSP’s public transport and mass transit planning team. Our team brings together broad and deep experience across transport modes and our holistic whole-system and lifecycle approach is underpinned by Net Zero and Future Ready principles. We have supported local authorities in preparing and updating BSIPs and funding bids for ZEBRA, LUF and similar funding opportunities, helping secure multi-million-pound investments across the country. We have strategic and operational expertise and have delivered many bus network projects in the UK and internationally. Mike is joined by Julian Moss, who leads on WSP’s use of Podaris and worked with them in developing a Bus Connectivity Assessment template. Julian will discuss approaches to identifying and assessing the impacts of bus network changes, to support the case for funding.
