Objectives:

This course is designed to enable you to explain traffic flow theory, compare capacity and performances of junctions and understand approaches to demand management and network management.

 

Understanding and being able to mitigate issues in connection with safety are also covered, as well as understanding and the ability to mitigate issues in relation to environmental impacts.

  • What does it cover?
  • - Meeting the competing needs of different users of transport networks.
  • - Highway link design and the theory of traffic flow.
  • - Principles of junction design and modelling.
  • - Infrastructure design and construction for active travel.
  • - Road safety auditing.
  • - Traffic management strategies: Traffic calming, Urban Traffic Control, Intelligent Transport Systems, Freight management.
  • - Intelligent transport system applications.
  • - Air quality and environmental management

  • What will the course outcome be?
  • - Explain traffic flow theory and appraise the capacity and performance of highway links.
  • - Evaluate and compare the capacity and performance of priority, roundabout and signal controlled junctions.
  • - Describe different traffic and demand management measures and explain how they can be combined effectively in network management.
  • - Use guidance, advice and analysis tools for road safety auditing.
  • - Identify environmental pollution issues, and suggest appropriate mitigation measures.
  • - Evaluate and explain the role of professionals from a range of disciplines and the ways in which they interact in transport network design and management.

Target Audience:

This module can be taken as a stand-alone CPD course, or used to build up credits towards a named UWE postgraduate qualification (PG Certificate, PG Diploma or Masters) in Transport or Transport Engineering and Planning by completing the module assessment.

 

There are no formal entry requirements for participants wishing to undertake this course as a stand-alone CPD course without the optional module assessment.

 

More Information:

This module will involve 6 hours direct contact time per session, every other week, across one semester:

Starting Thursday 23 January 2020, 10am-5pm

then every other Thursday on: 06, 20 February; 05, 19 March; 02 April 2020

The course is expected to take 150 hours to complete: 36 hrs directed contact learning; 36 hrs independent study; 78 hrs assessment, including preparation.
