The Tyne and Wear Metro is used by 41 million passengers a year and is being transformed by Nexus through the £385m All Change programme. The 11 year project includes renewal of tracks, power lines, signalling, stations and trains.

Nexus recently won the UK Rail Business Station Excellence Award for the £20m Haymarket Metro upgrade.

In April 2010 Deutsche Bahn (DB) Regio Tyne and Wear, began the operating contract for the Metro, working in close partnership with owners Nexus, as part of the reinvigoration of Metro services. The contract covers
delivery of the train service, fleet maintenance and modernisation of all 90 Metrocar trains and day-to-day station management.
