What is the Transport Planning Society?
The Transport Planning Society is the UK’s professional body for transport planning. It brings together people working across the profession to support, connect and champion transport planning and the people who work within it.
It represents a broad membership including transport planners in local authorities, consultants, academics and students, providing a shared professional community focused on improving practice, sharing knowledge and shaping the future of transport planning. It also works to raise the profile of transport planning and highlight the important role transport planners play in shaping successful, sustainable and accessible places.

Our strategy affirms our core purpose, providing a framework for directors, members and supporters. It guides our work and our decisions, helping us build on our past, succeed in the present and ensure the evolution of transport planning and the stability of the Society for the future.

- Ensure TPS is influential and proactive in seeking improvements in policy and practice, and in setting the transport agenda at a national, regional and local level.
- Provide a structured training programme, assessments and qualifications for the profession to support the career progression of transport planners.
- Build a strong and sustainable core membership base for the Society and grow the membership, particularly in geographical areas and sectors where transport planners are under-represented in the Society, and to be proactive in the creation of an open, diverse and inclusive transport planning community.
- Continue running an effective TPS operation to provide the widest possible forum to engage on relevant and topical transport planning issues.
- Improve the public understanding and the image of transport planning and transport planners, and promote transport planning as a profession.
How we are run
TPS is a company limited by guarantee, registered in England (company number 06564265). The Society and its members are governed by its Articles of Association. The Board is elected by the membership; Chairs are elected at the AGM and serve for two years.
We now have over 1,500 individual members and more than 40 Partner Members, and continue to grow.
