Senior Transport Planning Consultant - Spatial Planning

Job Description

We are seeking full time Senior Transport Planning Consultants to join our Spatial Planning and Development Management team based in the St Albans office.

We are a busy team with an expanding and exciting portfolio of work, with opportunities for candidates to get involved in a wide range of new projects as well as long-term framework contracts. 

The team’s repertoire of skills spans a range of transport planning disciplines including major highway projects, spatial strategy-making, development management, traffic modelling, travel plans, market research and public consultation. Our clients are mainly from the public sector and include Highways England and local authorities. 

The teams’ typical day-to-day activities include supporting the progression of major projects through Highways England’s Project Control Framework process; problem identification and deriving interventions; reviewing Transport Assessments and Travel Plans for proposed new development; building junction models to assess the impact of proposed developments on the local and strategic road network; assessing highway schemes against design standards; preparing transport plans and corridor strategies including development of multi-modal schemes; facilitating public consultation events and stakeholder workshops; and preparing evidence and written representation in response to Local Plan examinations in public. 

Candidates’ experience could include development management, spatial planning, transport policy, traffic modelling (in particular ARCADY and LinSig), junction design and public consultation. Experience in more than one of these areas will be desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Task management of specifying, supervising, analysing and reporting on a range of quantitative and qualitative exercises 
  • Undertake Project Management (under supervision) for smaller projects, including cost control and client liaison 
  • Supervision and mentoring of junior staff

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors / Masters degree in geography, engineering, mathematics, spatial planning or a related subject.
  • Experience of developing corridor-based and area-wide transport strategies is desirable.
  • Experience of preparing or reviewing Transport Assessments for a variety of land uses.
  • A good understanding of the planning system.
  • A good understanding of the principles of traffic modelling.
  • Experience in transport modelling such as ARCADY, PICADY, LinSig and TRANSYT. 
  • Experience in using MapInfo or ArcGIS is desirable.
  • Familiarity with highways design standard is desirable.
  • Self-motivation and capability to undertake specific tasks with minimum supervision.
  • The ability to manage small tasks.
  • The ability to manage own time to meet project deadlines.
  • The ability to communicate technical concepts and provide a level of supervision to more junior staff.
  • The ability to communicate aspects of work to senior staff.
  • Good team working and communication skills.
  • Good technical writing capability and presentation skills. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will be degree-qualified in geography, engineering, mathematics, spatial planning or a related subject, and will have proven experience in Transport Planning. 
  • Membership or working towards membership of a chartered professional institution.
