Transport Planning Consultant - Urban Space

Job Description

We are looking to recruit a Consultant; within our Transport Planning Business in our St Albans Office. We develop and use some of the most sophisticated transport modelling techniques, applying a range of specialist software. The ideal candidate will come from an analytical background, such as mathematics, economics, geography, or engineering/ architecture, and will have experience in transport planning and key responsibilities listed in this recruitment notice. We value a combination of analytical and communication skills, with a creative approach to problem solving, and are seeking an individual with an in depth appreciation of their chosen area with good knowledge of wider the transport planning issues.

Our clients include national and local transport authorities such as the UK Department of Transport and Transport for London, major sporting organisations such as the London Olympic Delivery Authority, private developers of land and transport facilities as well as overseas institutions such as the European Commission.

 

As a Transport Planning Consultant, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Plan and evaluate future transport schemes

  • Contributing to technical client reports and presentations

  • Forecast demand and revenue

  • Develop business cases

  • Undertake economic appraisal and market analysis

  • Analyse relationships between spatial planning and transport

  • Undertake transport modelling at a national and regional level right down to detailed micro-simulation including individual roads, public transport systems and crowd movements

  • Delivering high quality technical tasks under supervision from more senior staff.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • A graduate with a BSc/MSc in an analytical subject (e.g. geography, mathematics, economics, engineering).

  • A good understanding of the principles of transport planning, with minimum 2 years of relevant experience.

  • Self-motivation and capability to undertake specific tasks with minimum supervision.

  • Experience in transport modelling and forecasting of highway and public transport demand and supply and/or pedestrian modelling and planning.

  • Experience in micro-simulation modelling projects using VISSIM software

  • Experience in appraisal and evaluation of transport proposals.

  • Understanding in one or more other transport planning and simulation software packages e.g. SATURN, CUBE, EMME, VISUM, TUBA, Legion, etc.

  • The ability to manage small tasks.

  • Ability to manage own time to meet project deadlines.

  • The ability to communicate technical concepts and provide a level of supervision to more junior staff.

  • The ability to communicate aspects of work to senior staff.

  • Good presentation skills.

  • Good technical writing capability.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A masters degree or PhD in Transport Planning or related subject/social based discipline.

  • Membership or working towards membership of a chartered professional institution.
