Job Summary

We are currently seeking to appoint a Regional Director / Project Director to support the growth of our Transport Planning team in the South East of England, with a main focus on Highways and Multimodal Planning and modelling. The key parts of our Transport Planning work within Highways and Multi Modal planning currently includes strategic transport modelling and micro-simulation modelling in support of scheme assessments and preparation of business cases and funding applications.

This role will be based in our St Albans office on a full time permanent contract. St Albans is north of London, only 30 minutes from Kings Cross / St Pancras London, and is on the Thameslink railway line with direct routes to Croydon, Wimbledon, Luton, Brighton, and more.   • Business case development and funding advice

Our current portfolio of work in this field includes scheme appraisal and development of business cases for schemes in London and home counties; development and assessment of access solutions to major transport services and hubs, such as HS2, Heathrow and Luton airports; state-of-the-art big data projects using mobile phone and other data sources, such as TfL’s EDMOND project; development of new and exciting methods in transport demand analysis and model development; and working with transport operators such as TfL and Network rail on assessment and forecasting of operational impact of upgrades and improvements to the public transport network.

 

Role specifications for a Regional Transport Planning Project Director:

The role is within the Transport Planning team and will essentially be leading a team of transport planners in winning and delivery of transport planning, modelling and appraisal commissions. The team in the South East already benefits from a large number of significant frameworks, including contracts with a number of local authorities, Transport for London, Highways England and Department for Transport, as its main route to market which provides an excellent basis for securing further work and supporting the growth of the wider transport planning team.

The role will require sound knowledge of the UK transport planning market and client base, proven track record of leading technical teams in delivering significant transport planning and modelling projects and extensive experience of writing and reviewing proposals. Knowledge of UK methods and procedures such as business case development, scheme appraisal and webtag is a pre-requisite for the role. In addition, the critical attribute for the role is the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and clients across a wide spectrum of disciplines throughout the UK and Internationally to secure and deliver transport planning projects.

 

Your responsibilities for this Regional Transport Planning Project Director role will include:

  • Project leadership in delivering major projects in the relevant technical area to quality standards, on time, and within budget;

  • Interact and co-ordinate with other disciplines on various multi-disciplinary projects;

  • Oversight of workload and provision of advice and support to project managers;

  • Leading and taking ownership of development of technical and financial proposals on opportunities;

  • Contract management, overseeing and undertaking specification, supervision, analysis and reporting on a range of quantitative and qualitative exercises;

  • Specific technical leadership in an area of expertise; and

  • Keeping clients happy and engaged.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience in managing teams and developing them to meet their potential;

  • Experience of successfully delivering technically challenging transport planning projects, ideally Highway and Multi-modal projects;

  • Strong stakeholder management skills;

  • Strong transport planning market knowledge;

  • Knowledge and experience in transport modelling and forecasting and experience in appraisal and evaluation of transport proposals;

  • Knowledge of transport planning software packages e.g. SATURN, PARAMICS, CUBE, EMME, VISSIM, TUBA and spreadsheet modelling;

  • Strong technical and report writing skills;

  • Analytical mind and background;

  • Ability to explain technical concepts to others;

  • Ability to manage your time to ensure you meet demanding deadlines; and

  • Experience in mentoring and developing other members of staff.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Membership or working towards membership of a chartered professional institution such as CIHT, TPS, CILT or ICE

  • A Master’s degree or PhD in Transport Planning or related subject
