About the Role

An enthusiastic Senior Transport Planner or Principal Transport Planner, with particular experience in in sustainable transport and mobility management, is required to join the busy and dynamic team in our South Central region, based in either the Basingstoke, Southampton or Guildford offices.

WSP define Sustainable Transport as encompassing: Pedestrian Environment & Placemaking, Cycling, Travel Demand Management and Smart Mobility & Low Emission Vehicles. Sustainable transport is a key growth area in transport planning, and is increasingly recognised as being a vital ingredient in addressing many of the challenges facing the industry, including pollution and air quality, health and well-being, reallocating roadspace for better streets and smart mobility.

The role will focus on the delivery of projects in both the public and private sectors, in the UK and overseas. Your role will involve acting as a Project Manager, and supporting senior colleagues, on a diverse range of sustainable transport, public sector transport planning, development planning and mobility management projects. These will include a variety of local transport studies, ranging from multi-modal corridor studies to mode specific studies, addressing issues like barriers to walking and cycling and low emission vehicles, working with clients and stakeholders to develop a range of solutions through to early feasibility. Your approach will be informed by a good appreciation of issues concerning the built environment and urban design.

Project clients will typically include local transport authorities, national and regional transport bodies, private developers, transport service providers and private industry. Whilst the role will be focused in South East region, it will also likely involve working with clients in London, and on occasion you will be expected to travel as required for project meetings and to engage with colleagues, clients and co-professionals.

You will be responsible for both producing and checking the quality of technical work, client liaison, financial / programme management and resource management associated with the projects you are managing. The successful candidate will also be expected to mentor junior staff and potentially take on Line Management duties.

You will be provided with ample opportunities to rapidly become a well-rounded professional, and encouraged to support working winning, and ultimately lead proposal writing. The role will entail a significant client facing role, and you would aspire to undertake business development initiatives, secure new work, attend and present at conferences.

About You

Core Functions:

  • Project management of sustainable transport projects for a range of public and private sector clients, ensuring they are delivered to high standard, within budget and on programme;
  • Attendance at client meetings as required by project and business development activities;
  • Contribute towards the delivery of the UK Growth Strategy and local business development aspirations within the Basingstoke office;
  • Contributing to and, depending on scale, leading on sustainable transport planning bids, and technical input to marketing materials as required;
  • Responsibility for resourcing junior colleagues and attending resourcing meetings;
  • Mentor for junior members of the transport planning team to support their career development;
  • Regular liaison with senior colleagues overseeing business growth in the sustainable transport sector and actively seeking opportunities to support them on project delivery; and
  • Establish a network of professional contacts with a view to setting work winning targets after being in post for one year.
  • Contribute to the Sustainable Transport Virtual Team, including the national Knowledgeshare calls, regional representative meetings and growth initiatives.

Qualifications and Work Experience:

  • Degree in relevant spatial or numerical subject.

The following skills are essential:

  • Proven track record in involvement in, and managing, sustainable transport projects;
  • Sound understanding of the sustainable transport sector
  • Good understanding of applying technical expertise across different markets;
  • Knowledge of transport guidance and best practice
  • Numerical ability and capability in data analysis, including use of MS Excel;
  • Ability to produce and check project reports, including technical documents;
  • Ability to communicate technical arguments to technical and non-technical clients, and present outputs from studies to range of audiences; and
  • Dynamic and flexible in meeting the demands of clients and needs of the business.
